NEW! Curbside food waste collection option
While food waste separation is not required for South Tahoe residents, it’s a great way to cut down on what is sent to the landfill. STR has partnered with a local nonprofit to bring you optional curbside food waste pickups.
Tahoe Composts, a 501c3 nonprofit, offers a subscription-based service for weekly or monthly curbside pickups for food waste separate from STR’s other collection services. The service is available for customers in the City of South Lake Tahoe and in the El Dorado County areas within the Tahoe Basin.
The food waste collected is consolidated at STR and transported to Full Circle Compost. To learn more and sign up, visit their website at www.tahoecomposts.com.
By the Numbers…
In 2024, STR sent 1,893,303 glass bottles for recycling. That’s 828,000 pounds of glass! Recycling 15 glass bottles save enough energy to power a laptop for 31.3 hours.
Service Reminders
- All carts must be out by 7am on collection day.
- Remember to place carts at the edge of the property line with the lid-opening facing the street. Carts placed by bear boxes or up near the house will not be serviced.
- Our collection department picks up on all holidays.
- Do not place carts out until your morning of pickup. While the black garbage carts are locking, animal-resistant, they are not bear proof.
- If your garbage cart is not locking or becomes damaged in a way that appears unsafe, please contact our office at 530-541-5105.
Roll Carts Back After Collection
Please help to keep our community looking clean and tidy and roll your cart(s) back towards your residence after collection. We know it can be challenging to find a spot to tuck them away, but please do the best you can to keep them out of view. If you have a garage, carport, or a fenced area, you could keep them hidden there in between pickups. And if you don’t have a place to hide them completely, it helps our town look nice if they are at least pulled back from the roadway area. Thanks for your assistance.

Partner Spotlight: Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe
The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe is going the extra mile to protect our environment by sorting food waste and keeping it out of the landfill! STR has already partnered with our local elementary students and 6th graders to sort food waste at school, so expanding the program at the Boys & Girls Club was a breeze. The program began in February 2025, and since then, the Boys & Girls Club has diverted 440 pounds of food waste to compost. Keep up the amazing work, Boys & Girls Club!
Celebrating our team members!
June 16 – June 24, 2025 was National Waste and Recycling Workers Week, a week of celebration and recognition for all the hard working men and women that pick up, process, sort, and transport your waste and recycling. Plus the folks behind the scenes in the office that help to make it happen smoothly. We appreciate all of our team members here at STR for their hard work, dedication, and the essential role they play in keeping our community clean, safe, and sustainable.
